Researchers May Have Found a New Way to Cure Cancer

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Chasing cancer cells with chemotherapy drugs can save lives, but there's no guarantee that the treatment will kill every run-away cancer cell in the body.

hat if, instead of hunting those metastatic cells, a treatment could lure them out of hiding -- every last one of them -- and eliminate them in one swift blow?

Yong Wang, associate professor of bioengineering at Penn State, has created such a therapy -- a tissue-like biomaterial that attracts cancer cells, like bits of metal to a magnet, and entraps them.

"Once we trap the cancer cells, we can deliver anticancer drugs

Lunar Lion Update

In the $30 million Google Lunar X PRIZE, a challenge for the first privately funded team to transport a robotic spacecraft to the moon and send video, images, and data back to Earth, there are some big players with a lot of manpower. Competitors in the challenge, launched in 2007, include Moon Express, a lunar transportation and data company based at NASA's Silicon Valley research park; Synergy Moon, a nonprofit initiative with working groups toiling away in 15 countries; and Earthrise Space, which has a NASA contract to provide data from its first mission to the moon.

Happy News Monday - Hershey History

You can own a piece of Hershey History.
This is a neat idea. As many of you know I'm from Pennsylvania. Born and bred.
Hershey was a place I always wanted to go as a kid and never got to. I did when I was in college because Hershey isn't that far from State College.
Milton Hershey did a lot of good while he made a lot of money. I can admire that. I wish more people who made that kind of money would be that way. We might not mind them getting bonuses. But they can spend thier money however they want.
Anyway. Hershey and Penn State are intermingled.
Will I buy a piece of Hershey? No, but I don't really have any connection to that specific building. I think it is fantastic that the money goes to a good cause.
Would you like to own a piece of Hershey history?

Happy News Monday - IFC Dance Marathon

$7,490,133.87 total. Damn good! #THON
Each February the Interfraterity Council at Penn State University holds a 2-day Dance Marathon. The money is raised for The Four Diamonds Fund. This fund goes to researching cures for childhood cancers
That weekend past was Thon weekend.

Thon is my one regret from college. I wanted to be a helper not a dancer, but I never did. I slept late that day and I didn't get to the meeting. Could I have called someone and volunteered? Probably. I just didn't. It was my last semester at PSU and it was a nutty one. I was working very hard taking a lot of credits.
I'm sorry to this day that I never did Thon. I once delivered pizza to Thon. That's the closest I've been.
All year long you see students with cans at intersection. I've seen them all the way in NJ.
Of course I give every time.
More than $50 million has been given since the event began in 1973.

Happy New Monday. Rose Bowl Baby!

Penn State
Any regular readers know I went to Penn State.
Anyone who knows me for more than a day probably knows I went to Penn State.
I have Penn State sweatshirts. A Penn State scrunchy. Two Penn State blankets. And a magnet on the back of my car.
And I have Penn State things on my Christmas list.
Back in 1982 I was looking for a college. I knew that I wanted to write, but I didn't really know much beyond that. Hard to look for a specific school when you don't know that much.
But in the Fall of 81 I had watched a football game with my Dad. Penn State vs someone. Can't even remember. I just remember that there was an energy about the game.
So I applied to PSU. And got in!
I needed to be part of something bigger than myself. And I have to tell you that everywhere I go, I meet someone that has graduated from my alma mater. Even at the Grand Canyon.
So why is this Happy News?
Because Penn State is going to the Rose Bowl.
They beat Michigan State this weekend and secured their spot in Pasadena.
I get to watch one more football game of my favorite team.
Squee!
So who is your fave college team?
