Excerpt: License to Nerd

I have a special place in my heart for the nerds in the world. The socially awkward, the ones too smart to tie their own shoes. So of course I have to write about them. This is a first in a series called Nerds Saving the World.

License to Nerd

Madison West walked down Main Street, Mill Hall, towards the one person who could help her. The one person with such a unique skill set, that no one else could duplicate. A skill set acquired doing things even she didn't have enough security clearance to know about.

Who would have thought he could be in small town New Jersey? Why wasn't he doing something for the government instead of helping his brothers run a two-bit detective agency? That, Madison thought, was probably a story for another day.

Right now, she needed him for a case. Her last case, she reminded herself. She was not going to work for the government anymore.

Not that he would know her real agenda. No, she had to play this as if she was just looking for Charlie.

With the sun in her face, she strode down the sidewalk looking for Quincy Detective Agency. She found it in a brick building that stood apart from those on either side, creating two alleys. She ducked into one of them to think once again about what she would say to Peter Quincy when she saw him for the first time in, well, since she married her husband.

Hot Hunk Friday - Adam Brody

Let's take out the fact that Adam Brody's probably young enough to be my son, he's got the nerd thing going for him.
And regular readers know that I have a thing for nerds.
And yes, I watched The OC. In the beginning. It got weird as most shows do after awhile.
Seth Cohen had this enthusiasm I remember from some friends I had in high school. Not sure I really appreciated how much fun they were. I actually know someone now, someone I work with, that has this level of enthusiasm. He's young and nerdy.
I haven't, but I will have to include a character like Seth Cohen in one of my books.

Hot Hunk Friday - Thomas Gibson

Regular readers of this blog know I love nerds. There is something charming about thier innocence and anal retentiveness.

I first saw Thomas Gibson in Dharma and Greg. He played a very straightlaced lawyer. Greg reminded me a lot of my husband. I would almost fall off the chair laughing thinking my husband would do something just like this character. In a later season, he and Dharma were in a car accident. When Greg and his friend go the police station to pick up the trunk contents the cop hands him an itemzied list. The friend remarks how nice it was of them to do that. The cop said it was taped to the inside of the trunk lid.

Now my husband hasn't actually done that, but I could see him doing that.

I haven't watched Thomas Gibson on Criminal Minds for two reasons. I don't watch too many cops shows. I know too many real cops and how unrealistic those shows can be. Also, I think his attractiveness to me is tied in with the Greg character.

At least two of my works in progress have nerds in them. I reveal them as heroic, but not in an overbearing way. They are reluctant alpha males.

It's kind of fun.

Can you name your fave nerd hero?

Jerry Trainor of ICarly

This may be an odd choice for some for a Friday Hunk, but I have a soft spot for nerdy, artsy guys. Jerry Trainor is from a Nickelodeon show called ICarly. He is the guardian for his little sister Carly of the show's name.

He's an artist and a pretty cool brother. It is one of those shows I can watch with my kids.

This guys seems like he's having so much fun with the role of Spencer. He gets to be wacky, but still be the grownup who helps Carly through some normal teenage problems. The show isn't deep like an Afterschool Special, but it still can teach. It does lead to conversations with my kids sometimes.

And it looks like so much fun to shoot the show.

The other reason I like Spencer is he's a sock fanatic. Like I am. I don't have any that flash, but I'm working on finding them.

Plus, I've written a few manuscripts with nerds in them that I'm shopping around right now.

One I'm writing actually involves a webcast in it so it has been fun researching how that is done.

So maybe my pic is odd, but it makes sense to me.

Nerds rule the world.
