No Authorsday this week

Thanks for stopping by anyway.
I was in and out of DMV this morning in less than 10 minutes. The ladies were so nice. I even got to pick which picture from my license.
This is a far cry from the crabby old lady who used to occupy another DMV which shall remain nameless. Her lipstick was on her lips and around her lips. I guess that was to make her lips seem bigger.
My husband has an odd signature. (long story). She once demanded that he sign his check so she could read it. He argued that if he didn't sign it with his signature the bank wouldn't cash it.
She was not amused.

I work for my local hospital. I schedule people for CPR classes among other things. I had someone leave me a message and she marked it private and priority. Really, people, it's CPR we're teaching. We're not giving anything out free. We're not performing CPR. And just because you let your card expire does not make it my problem.

BTW, I'm looking for authors to host on Thursday in August. I only have one lined up. Contact me at chrisreddingauthor@yahoo.com if you are interested.

Happy News Monday CPR and AED Week

The American Heart Association designated last week CPR and AED Awareness Week. The organization wanted to teach 1 million people CPR.
To help with that Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ and the Somerset Patriots' baseball team based in Bridgewater,NJ hosted a CPR Grand Slam at TD Bank Ballpark Saturday June 6.
100 people attended under cloudy skies. 100 people were given the skills to potentially save a life. 100 people chose to give up a Saturday morning to learn to help another person.
That's awesome!

Happy News Monday - Heart Healthy Kitchen

Stocking a heart healthy kitchen may be easier than you think.
You probably think I'm just beating you over the head with this topic. It's my thing. I've been an American Heart Association CPR instructor for 15 years. I work in a hospital. It's my thing.
And I know two people only in their 50's who have had heart attacks in the last four months. One had a quintuple bypass.
It's my thing.
Prevention is the key. Yes, there are risk factors you cannot prevent. Heredity is a big one. But you can take statins to prevent cholesterol build up if that is the problem. It seems to be a win-win because of so few side effects.
There are risk factors you can prevent. Stop smoking. Lose weight. Exercise.
I know it isn't always easy. Nothing worth anything in life is.
But take that first step. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park a little further from the store than you usually do.
You don't have to change your whole lifestyle overnight.
Not unless you have a heart attack.
But I want you to prevent that.
So what can you do this week? What can you do to reduce your risk of heart disease?

Happy New Monday - Andi MacDowell

Andie MacDowell is raising awareness about heart disease.

Heart disease is not sexy. No one is losing their hair. (scroll down a bit to see what I mean.) There are no cute kids to use as poster children. There is no run for it. There are very rarely celebrites speaking out on the issue. Until Andie MacDowel has taken it on.
Nonetheless it is a national health crisis.
According to www.americanheart.org 1 in 3 women have some form of heart disease. Each year 60,000 more women than men have strokes.
I know someone personally who just had a quintuple bypass. And he's skinny, works out and eats right. It's genetic. It runs in his family.
Heart disease is invisible. Your first symptom can be a fatal heart attack.
So I'm glad to see a celebrity talking about it.
Do you know that for women, heart disease kills more than all cancers combined?
Someone in Hollywood needs to take up the mantle of this devastating disease. For some reason, when celebrity lends thier name to a cause it makes it more real for us.
So brava to Andie MacDowell.
What can you do?
You say you don't have any risks?
Get a checkup. Get blood work done.
You've already done that?
Take a CPR course. It isn't the EMT's that will save a person, it is you. You will be the one there when someone collapses in a movie theater or in the mall. You will be there when someone has a stroked in a restaurant.
Go to www.americanheart.org to find a class near you.
And save a life today!

Hot Hunk Friday - Dr. Travis Stork

There is a show on during the day. Actually in the morning where I am. I watch it while I'm working out. It's called The Doctors. There's a pediatrican, a plastic surgeon, an ob/gyn and of course Dr. Travis Stork, ER doctor.
I love the show because I think it is no-nonsense without being stupid or treating people as if htey are stupid. There isn't fancy medical jargon, but there is sound advice.
And of course I like medical stuff.
And Dr. Travis Stork is not hard to look at. Being involved in emergency medicine is a plus also. As regular readers know, I'm a CPR instructor and I've been a member of a rescue squad for some time now.
From my research, he was on The Bachelor at one point. That isn't one of the shows I watch so I had no idea he was already a celebrity.
But he could play doctor with me anytime.
I haven't seen too many hot doctors, and I work in a hospital. My dog's vet is pretty nice looking and the oral surgeon who took my wisdom teeth at was pretty hot.
Did you have a nice-looking doctor at some point?

Happy News - Stayin' Alive

The Bee Gees have the right beat.
The University of Illinois did a study and found that the Bee Gees 1970's hit Stayin Alive has the right beat for doing CPR. Think about it. You could hum that song and save someone's life.
Why did I pick this story to highlight today?
Because in February of 2009 I will be an American Heart Association CPR instructor for 15 years.
And anything that makes it easier for the everyday person to save a life, I'm all for it. I've lost track of how many people that I've taught CPR to. I could get you the number for this year if you really want. It's probably big. I've taught a lot this year.
What I don't know is if anyone has saved a life. Well, I do know someone who saved thier daughter from choking not long after I taught them to do the Heimlich Maneuver. Has anyone been saved by me teaching? I'd like to think so, but really if I were to stop teaching then I could assume no one will be saved.
But it takes the person on the street. The EMT's and paramedics and police officers may take a few minutes to get there. If you know CPR you can save that person. You can keep thier brain alive by pumping blood through it by performing CPR.
Isn't that powerful? The longest class is four hours long. That isn't a lot of time. Whose life could you save?
So sign up for a cpr course today.
